Poolsiri Virojanapa, executive vice president (Planning and Finance) of Airports of Thailand (AOT) spoke of the increasing trust from international investors during AOT’s road shows in Hong Kong and Singapore on August 12 and 13.

“Foreign investors understand the situation in Thailand very well and they are interested in big-scale investment,” said Virojanapa. AOT expects a 2-3% growth in passenger numbers this year compared to 2013, driven by positive figures for Q4.

AOT is planning on organizing a road show in the UK and the US in September and October 2014.

Nuntawan Sakuntanaga, the director general of The DITP, recently released trade figures with Japan’s Kanzai, Chubu and Shikoku provinces for the first half of 2014.

Up until June, Thailand’s exports to Japanese provinces amounted to US$671 million, 5.4% higher than the same period in 2013. Automobile and auto part exports increased by 27.8%, raw materials by 26.9%, chemicals by 16%, electronic appliances by 11.2%, machines by 11.2% and tools by 5.5%.Sakuntanaga added that she expected trade to be even better in the second half of 2014.

Suphan Saquandeekul, the director of Thai Trade Center, Osaka, Japan says that Universal Studio Japan’s new Harry Potter zone would help the economy in the Kanzai region in the latter half of 2014, attracting an additional two million visitors. Overall economic growth in the Kanzai region is expected to top US$539 billion. This will help Thailand’s exports to Japan, due to the higher demand in the region.

The Ministries of Natural Resources and Environment, and of the Interior, the Federation of Thai Industries, the Thai Society of Environmental Journalists and Unilever Thailand organised a seminar to discuss the current waste disposal situation in the Kingdom. Entitled Thailand's Waste Crisis: Partnership for Sustainable Solutions, it was held on August 18 at St. Regis Hotel,
Bangkok.

The aim of the roundtable seminar was to find cooperative solutions for sustainable and efficient waste disposal towards the goal of reducing waste in Thailand.

Bauke Rouwers, a speaker of the seminar, said that Unilever’s twin success in reducing non-hazardous waste to zero-tonnage and reducing the use of plastic to 17,000 tonnes a year are examples of the private sector’s efforts to counter the waste crisis.

“As Thailand's economy has been growing very fast in the past five decades, it is inevitable that more waste and pollution also occur,” he said. “In order to pass on the beautiful Thailand to the children of the next generation, truly efficient waste management is the priority.”

The DITP and the Construction Institute of Thailand greeted trade representatives from Bhutan during their visit to Thailand from August 3 to 9. The Bhutan visitors met entrepreneurs and suppliers from the construction and service industries, and signed agreements with Thailand to develop construction and industry projects, as well as human resources.

The trade representatives also decided to buy two cellular lightweight concrete block machines from Thailand, worth six million baht (US$188,000), with the intention to buy a further 10 million baht (US$313,000) worth. The representatives said the machines would help develop Bhutan’s construction industry and other associated
industries.

The Department of Tourism, Ministry of Tourism & Sports together with Chulalongkorn University and Silpakorn University will carry out a campaign to promote tourism for blind tourists under the project Feel the Happiness: Art for the Blind, in September.

Selected local and international artists will get to produce artwork for the blind which will be displayed from September 18 to 24 in Bangkok’s Chamchuri Square. The sculptures will be used for future projects to facilitate tourism for people with disabilities.

Dr. Suwat Sidthilaw, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, says that the project will help facilitate visually impaired tourists to have the same experience as other tourists through feeling the sculptures. This project is aimed to promote greater equality within Thai society. Blind visitors from around the world will have a good chance to experience the beautiful landmarks in Thailand in this exhibition. The art contest is now open for registration.
