Following an earlier issue where a Chinese food supplier had shipped chicken meat which was past its sell-by date, many restaurant chains in Japan, including Starbucks, McDonald’s, KFC, convenience store chains such as Family Mart and other Japanese restaurants have decided to cut ties with China and use chicken from Thailand instead.

So far, Thailand has export 260,000 tonnes of chicken meat to Japan this year, 7 per cent higher than in 2013. Orders for frozen and processed chicken meat from Japan and EU countries from January to June 2014 have also increased by 2.6 per cent, totalling US$1,085 million since 2013.

The earlier incident has prompted Japan to tighten up its food inspection procedures to ensure food safety, especially for chicken meat. In response, Thailand is making sure it maintains the highest standards in production, packaging and export of chicken meat products.

Nuntawan Sakuntanaga, the Director General of the DITP ensures world consumers that Thailand is one of the world’s premier food producers and that the Kingdom maintains a high standard of hygiene throughout its food industry.
