Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn and the US Trade Representative Michael B. Froman held a discussion on trade and investment expansion between the two countries under the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) in Washington D.C. on April 22.

“Thailand has asked the US to support GSP [General Scheme of Preferences] for additional Thai goods, including travelling items and coconut juice as the demand for the latter has surged in the US,” said Tantraporn.

Other issues discussed included intellectual-property rights, the US’s new food security law and cooperation on patent training for Thai officers.

According to the Commerce Ministry, the US is Thailand’s third-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching US$37.92 billion last year, of which Thai exports to the US constituted US$24.05 billion and imports US$13.86 billion.
