The Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Somkid Jatusripitak, stated that his recent trips to Iran on January 30 and Oman on February 3 had fostered strong trade ties. In addition to inking major trade deals on rice and rubber, talks on Free Trade Agreements (FTA) and industrial investment progressed.

Minister of Commerce Apiradee Tantraporn, said that in Oman, the team of delegates was able to generate interest in investment in Thailand’s tourism and service sectors. Oman has established a committee to study a FTA with Thailand, along with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, Qatar and Bahrain.

In Iran, Thai officials were able to expand cooperation on trade and investment in processed food, Halal food, chemicals and digital equipment.

Discussions with the private sector have led to deals for 300,000 tonnes of rice and 20,000 tons of pararubber to be exported from Thailand to Iran, to the value of 5.3 billion baht.
