The Ministry of Transport has set plans to improve transportation infrastructure in 2016, with construction on the Bang Yai – Kanchanaburi motorway expected to commence in June. The route, one of the three motorways scheduled, will be an important economic route connecting Thailand with Myanmar.

Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said on 10 January that last year the ministry had improved many land, water and air transportation routes in an effort to help stimulate the country’s tourism and economy.

“In 2016, the ministry will expand its existing projects such as two double-track rail lines and three motorways,” Termpittayapaisith added. The ministry’s 10 electric train projects would be submitted to the Cabinet for approval. The expansion of electric trains would be included in the 12th National Economic and Social Development Plan.
