The tourism sector delivered higher than expected results in 2015, generating roughly two trillion baht in revenue, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports announced on 11 January.

Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanawarangkul said that tourism revenue in 2015 grew by 30 billion baht year-on-year. She highlighted the ministry's ‘12 Can't-miss Cities’ as a major factor behind this success. The campaign increased tourist spending to an average of 5,050 baht per day from 4,500 baht the year before. The campaign will be expanded to include 12 cities for 2016, and renamed ‘12 Can't-miss Cities Plus’.

Wattanawarangkul said the expanded campaign will further promote domestic tourism. Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has instructed the ministry to raise the standards of tourism in Thailand in order to gain more confidence abroad and establish a one-stop service for tourist assistance.
