Issue 20

The Thai government has announced a 20% reduction tax on imported gems and jewellery products to be sold at the 55th Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair from February 25 to 28 at the IMPACT Arena, Bangkok.

“The government has help with promoting exports as well as developing overseas markets via trade fairs, road shows and various exhibitions,” said Somchai Phornchindarak, President of the Thai Gem and Jewellery Traders Association (TGJTA) and Chairman of the Gems, Jewellery and Precious Metal Confederation of Thailand, before adding that he thought Thai jewellery entrepreneurs had a bright future.

Products to be covered by the measure include pearls, precious stones and metals, imitation jewellery and coins. Both local and foreign buyers at the fair will enjoy the advantage of 20% savings, giving them additional purchasing power at the exhibition. Foreign exhibitors can import and sell gems and jewellery from other countries duty free, while local exhibitors can reduce their sales price due to the reduction in tariffs.
