The Ministry of Commerce in collaboration with other agencies and India organised the ASEAN-India Expo and Forum from August 2 to 5 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center to celebrate the 25th anniversary of ASEAN-India relations.

The event was held under the concept of ‘Strategic Economic Partnership & Connectivity’. It comprised of two key events: the Forum and the Expo.

The Forum, which ran from August 3 to 4, featured a series of roundtable and panel discussions on the economy, trade, investment and tourism by key players from ASEAN Countries, India and beyond. The Expo from August 2 to 5 showcased the high potential of ASEAN nations and India in country pavilions and corporate brands, as well as having more than 250 booths offering the countries’ products and services at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.

Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn met Turkey’s Economic Minister Nihat Zeybekci in Turkey on July 19 to mark the start of negotiations on the free trade agreement (FTA) between the two countries.

“In the first phase, we aim to cut import tariffs on 100% of goods traded between Thailand and Turkey, which will cover more than 10,000 items. After that, we will start negotiating for the liberalisation of the service sector,” Tantraporn said.

According to the Commerce Minister, trade value between the two countries was US$1.2 billion in 2016 with a trade surplus of US$745 for Thailand.

The South Korean government has decided to import Thai eggs to help ease a domestic shortage caused by the country’s bird flu outbreak, DITP General-Director Malee Choklumlerd said on June 21.

“It is the first time for South Korea to import eggs from ASEAN countries. South Korea plans to import around 2-2.3 million eggs per week from Thailand,” Choklumlerd said.

Potential Thai egg exporters are encouraged to register with Thailand’s Department of Livestock Development before for consideration. Currently, two Thai companies are allowed to export eggs to South Korea and the country needs more imported eggs.

The DITP and the Thai Trade Office in Tokyo organised pop-up store project Thai Sense.jp at five Select Shops in Japan to promote Thai fashion brands from June 16 to July 9.

Select Shop is a boutique offering a wide range of fashionable products from different brands.

“This project is aimed at promoting Thai fashion brands among Japanese consumers. We want them to recognise Thai brands for their international standards in terms of quality and design. The DITP expects this event will generate around US$40,000 dollars (4.5 million yen) of total sales,” DITP General-Director Malee Choklumlerd said.

Under this project, 12 Thai brands - asv, Curated, iCONic, ISSUE, Lalalove, Leisure Projects, Milin, Mirror Mirror Brand, Shaka, TandT, TuTTi and VICK’S - are available at the pop-up stores at five Select Shops - Rose Bud Salon in Shibuya, Cleopatra fig in Lumine-Est Department Store, Apt.335 NY in Harajuku, Rose Bud Salon in Tennoji, Osaka, and Cleopatra fig in Osaka.

Nine Thai film companies attended the Cannes Film Festival 2017 at Cannes, France and joined a business matching activity hosted by the DITP during the fair from May 18 to 22.

“This year business matching generated US$24.4 million (830 million baht), or double the 2016 figure. The most popular are Thai horror films while there is a positive response for Thai comedies and action movies too,” DITP General-Director Malee Choklumlerd said.
